10 High Cholesterol Foods to Avoid During Pregnancy
Pregnancy is a wonderful time in life. There is a beautiful little baby growing inside of you, and you’re experiencing all the highs and lows of being an expectant mother. There is so much to look forward to when your little one is born, but first you have to get through the pregnancy.
Your diet is very important during your pregnancy. If you eat the right foods, your baby will be born healthy and strong, and your body will have all the energy it needs. If you don’t eat right, you could suffer from problems like heartburn, acid reflux, constipation, digestive upset, fatigue, and the list goes on and on.
Here is a list of foods to avoid during your pregnancy. Not only are these foods high in calories and fat, but they’re also loaded in cholesterol. They’re all foods to avoid during early pregnancy, as well as in the later trimesters:
There are certain soft cheeses that you will need to avoid during your pregnancy. Blue cheese is on the list of foods to avoid during pregnancy, as they contain bacteria that may be unsafe to your child.
Unless you are eating the blue cheese cooked, it’s better to avoid soft blue cheese, Roquefort, and gorgonzola cheese. Any cheese with a mold-ripened rind (such as camembert, goat cheese, or brie) should also be avoided.
They can not only lead to health risks, but they are very high in fat and cholesterol, and can cause acid reflux and general digestive upset.
Deli meat is a food that should be avoided in principle, and not just one of the foods to avoid during your pregnancy. Not only is it high in fat, but it’s also laced with nitrates and nitrites–both of which can lead to cancer–as well as A LOT of sodium.
You’ll find that most deli meats have very little nutritional value, and there is even the risk that they will be contaminated with listeria. This has been linked to miscarriages, and can infect the baby’s growing body with blood poisoning.
Pate is not for everyone, as it’s basically pureed meat. If you’re wondering what foods to avoid during pregnancy, pate is on the list of foods to avoid during pregnancy. Pate is often contaminated with listeria, the same bacteria that makes deli meat dangerous.
It’s in your best interest to stay FAR away from pate of any sort, as it’s not only dangerous for your child, but it’s fairly high in sodium, fat, and cholesterol.
Red meat is a food that you should eat a little of during your pregnancy, as it contains nutrients that can keep your body healthy. However, if you are going to eat red meat, make sure that it is thoroughly cooked.
If there is any sign of blood or even pink, there is a risk of toxoplasmosis. This is an infection caused by parasites found in red meat, and though it may be rare, it’s better to avoid any risk.
Eggs may contain a bit of cholesterol, but studies have found that eating eggs is not too dangerous for your health. You can eat eggs without worrying too much about your cholesterol levels, though it couldn’t hurt to stick with the egg whites now and again.
But if you are pregnant, it’s always best to stay far away from raw eggs–such as those used in Oriental cooking, merengue, mayonnaise, etc. Raw eggs may contain salmonella bacteria, which can seriously threaten both your health and the health of your baby.
If there is anything that contains animal liver, it’s best to stay FAR away from it. Remember that the liver is the organ that collects all of the fat and toxins, so eating the liver is basically like eating the garbage can of your body.
You’ll find that the liver also often contains a lot of Vitamin A, and too much of this vitamin can do harm to your child. Haggis, liver pate, and liver sausage are all no-nos.
While shellfish aren’t too high in cholesterol, you’ll find that they are fairly loaded with sodium and purines. They are more likely to cause infections of gout than heart problems, but they’re virtually guaranteed to cause health problems in pregnant women if they are not cooked before eating.
It’s smart to ALWAYS avoid raw shellfish, as there is a huge risk of bacteria and pollutants being absorbed from the ocean water. Stay safe and only eat cooked shellfish for your baby’s sake.
While some claim that unpasteurized milk is actually healthier than the stuff you find in supermarkets, it’s a risk you should avoid if you are pregnant.
The milk may contain the listeria bacteria, and the fact that it’s not heated means the bacteria will not be eliminated before you drink it. You could be putting your baby at serious risk if you aren’t careful. It’s always smarter just to drink regular milk!
Fish may not be too high in cholesterol, but there is some. The real danger from fish comes from the heavy metals and pollutants that it may have absorbed.
The ocean is highly contaminated in many places, and any fish that swim through these places may be exposed to metals like mercury and other toxins.
If the meat is contaminated and you eat the meat, you expose your body to a huge health risk–leading to potential birth defects!
If seafood has only been “smoked”, there is a very real chance that it is still contaminated with listeria bacteria.
You could be putting your baby’s health at risk by eating the partially raw “smoked” foods, so it’s better to avoid any type of seafood or fish that isn’t completely cooked.
This might seem like a daunting list, but it’s not too hard to follow. Do the smart thing and eat the right foods for your baby’s sake!
